At one time the owner of a chain of small motion picture theatres that business reversals had recently forced him to sell, Israel, 42, checked himself into the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, complaining of chronic laryngitis. On the morning of February 17, 1930, a nurse noticed Israel was missing from his bed and the window of his fourth floor room was open. The former theatre owner's broken body was found on the street below. An unsigned note found in the room read: "I am shocked at myself as much as the rest of the world. There is a God in heaven and one cannot break His laws and be unpunished."
